Graduate School Philosophy Ethics Dilemma and Me

Ok, true story as of maybe 30 minutes ago…

I would like it known that names have been changed to protect the innocent.  I’d also like it to be known that I was at home watching the children, so I was not involved.

During grocery shopping, a woman notices a boy / young man, perhaps aged 14, shopping with his father.  They are an “average” father / son team, meaning not white trash or baseball-/wrestler-dad douchers.  The boy steals a package of condoms.  Only the woman notices.  The woman tells one of the grocery store workers.  She does not stay to see the fallout of this act.

Did she do the right thing?

When I first heard this tale, I thought “oh GOD!  The poor kid!”  The woman involved followed, “What about the dad?  What if that was your daughter’s boyfriend?”

I didn’t like the second question…

So the question stands for you readers: did she do the right thing?

Update:  The woman asked the workers at the grocery store if the kid would be arrested or anything.  They said no, that they would just pull him aside when they leave the store and talk with him...ugh...
